YOU have gotten to where you are because you DESERVE IT. Here I am after 4 years of working full time, extra hard to keep my scholarship money, doing every extracurricular, first in my family to graduate and from RIT.
I think so many of us were triggered by this whole college admissions scandal because it was such a slap in the face- but also the reality od how the world works.
The reality that we have to work 3x as hard to even get a foot in the door . But those with privilege just get to make a phone call & throw some money at it.
I’ve literally been in situations where I had someone in my same position with 1/2 as much credibility and merit. I hated them. They were nice people but I realized - it was the system I hated .
When I realized - it shouldn’t be this hard. I shouldn’t have to work so incredibly hard to get half as far. The only reason I was is because of the socioeconomic bracket I was born into. That I realize it’s this weird “game” where wealth dictates but often were shut off from it.
But here is what I’m seeing - we get the foot in and work hard to make it easier for the next people coming in.
We had to figure out college applications, scholarships, waivers so that our younger siblings could get in or future children. We figure out how to navigate in spaces we weren’t welcome - and pass it on to let others know how and make it more normalized. We figure out finances and begin to generate wealth for our future generations.
We build our networks, refer each other, provide each other resources so that we all glow up together.
So yes - I’m furious but realize it’s a “game” and I’m tired of playing - so instead let’s keep disrupt it becoming the academics, lawyers, policy makers, CEOs and make our own rules to ensure we’re not the losers in this.
