Abrupt flight
.
.

A new bee to me that I spent several days chasing this spring is the Abrupt Digger Bee (Anthophora abrupta). Abrupt is a perfect name for this fast and abrupt moving flyer and it took me a couple of days to get my timing right to capture it in flight. Jeff @alligatordave will remember hunting these guys with me in the Texas Mountain Laurel trees at Mercer Botanic Garden but neither of us got a good macro shot that day because they spend so little time at each flower. It took me going back the next weekend before I finally got some good in flight shots but I still don’t have any macros.🤷🏻‍♂️ A solitary, ground nesting bee, abrupta dig brood chambers underground.  Like many ground nesting bees, diggers can be found nesting in large aggregations but each female is the queen of her own nest. At around 15mm, these bees are about the same size as honeybees but have a much stockier build as you can see. They are superb pollinators and in addition to collecting pollen on the scopa of their hind legs, I’ve got some hilarious shots coming soon of their noses caked with a streak of pollen too!😝
